Senior Hardware Systems Engineer

South San Francisco, CA
Full Time
Hardware
Mid Level
Do you like machines that move heavy things? Is it even better if they make cool noises? Do you hate parking? Do you love parking? If so, we have a job for you

Volley Automation is looking for an outstanding hardware systems engineer to help bring our robotic parking garage to life. You'll make robots that safely stow patrons' cars, and retrieve them upon demand. There are lots of other mechanisms and infrastructure that go into a robot garage too. You'll work closely with our interdisciplinary team of robot nerds to make everything come together.

We are a small and highly collaborative team that values open communication. It is important to empower every team member to take ownership of their work, which contributes to everyone’s success. We're looking for someone who thrives in a cross-functional, fast-paced environment and is excited to join us on this adventure.

THE ROLE:

You will work closely with our team of mechanical, electrical, and software engineers, as well as our operations teams, to develop and deploy our robot parking garage. You will be the glue that ensures all of the parts work together.

In this role, you will touch everything - our AGV that moves cars, the automated systems that interact with it, automated EV charging, and the rest of the garage of the future. You must be excited at the prospect of seeing your creation actually deployed out into the wild. To accomplish this, you will need to:
  • Help push the design of complex electromechanical systems forward from concept to production
  • Roll up your sleeves to do some prototype bring-up and debug
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (EE, SW, project and product managers) to integrate and ship complete systems - ROBOTICS IS A TEAM SPORT
  • Create and execute test plans (and analyze the results!)
  • Don't forget the documentation
  • Occasional travel required to facilitate customer installations and troubleshoot problems
YOU HAVE:
  • 10 years designing and developing products
  • Ability to troubleshoot and diagnose complex system-level issues across various domains (electrical, mechanical, software, and operations)
  • Strong electromechanical testing and troubleshooting chops
  • A high degree of comfort with ambiguity
  • Basic familiarity with software systems, such as Linux, C, Python or other applicable tools and frameworks
  • Good relationship with sensors (depth, cameras, temperature, power/current, etc.)
  • A burning desire to identify the root cause of a problem
  • You need to be a clear communicator, and that includes the documentation you generate
  • BS in engineering (or equivalent)
  • Enthusiasm to come onsite to the office at least 3 days per week
  • Must love robots
NICE TO HAVE:
  • You have shipped a product
  • Experience with autonomy / systems engineering / automotive network architecture / vehicle integration
  • Strong working knowledge of communications protocols such as CAN, TCP/IP, I2C, UART, etc.
  • Know how to integrate things that live in a rugged environment
  • Understand and appreciate validation and verification
  • RF/WiFi/networking - apprentice wizard level
  • Familiarity with industrial controls, microcontrollers, and motor drivers
  • Familiarity with agency certs and testing (UL, IEC, ISO, CE)
  • Dangerous hobbies a plus
Applicant must provide proof of his or her eligibility to work in the United States if selected for hire.
